SARC Policy on Academic Honesty & Ethical Decision Making

As a SARC peer tutor you are expected to display the highest standards of academic and personal integrity at all times while employed in this position. The University of Central Florida does not tolerate academic dishonesty in any form. This material is designed to provide information about the most common situations where concerns regarding academic integrity can be especially problematic, and to provide strategies that can be used to prevent scenarios of compromised integrity.

Cases of academic impropriety of any type will be dealt with in accordance with the Rules of Conduct and the Disciplinary Process for the University of Central Florida, as described in the latest edition of the Golden Rule ( and are grounds for dismissal. You are expected to be familiar with the Golden Rule.

Examinations are not group projects.

Unless you are specifically told in writing by your subject-matter instructor that you may view, use and/or discuss his or her exams during tutoring, do not utilize prior exams or assist students with current examinations. If faculty explicitly tells you in writing that an exam of his or hers is open book and that you may assist his or her students on this exam then collaboration is being encouraged.

While tutors often work with students studying for an examination, never collaborate with others on an examination unless authorized in writing to do so by the course instructor. Additionally, providing any direct knowledge of an examination that students will take in the future is academically dishonest.

Any unauthorized prior knowledge of test material is considered cheating. Studying together and working together are fine, up to the time of the start of the examination. Use of study materials obtained elsewhere is fine, as long as it is not designed specifically as the examination you are about to take.

Assisting students through the creation of new study aides is at the heart of your leadership position with SARC.

It is essential that proper citation be followed at all times when creating study aides. All work created by you for use during tutoring that is not your own original work must be properly cited.

Please pay attention to copyright and other considerations when using textbooks. Obtain permission for use of copyrighted materials and use these materials according to the permission you receive (most permissions will be granted only for your own personal use, which does not permit you to sell or send to others).

Inappropriate behaviors are:
  • Working together on exams at any time, including those that are completed online or proctored.
  • Sharing information with others about an examination that will be taken later by either of you.
  • Obtaining or distributing known test material prior to an examination.
  • Using information obtained from others from any source with attribution (citing).

Tutoring is highly interactive, and as such you are expected to behave professionally at all times while respecting the people you interact with in the course of fulfilling your job duties, including UCF faculty, staff, and students.

Peer tutors work closely with faculty members and also frequently provide instructions and support to other undergraduate students. There are opportunities within this position to develop relationships that produce conflicts of interest.

Some of the common situations where conflicts of interest can occur are:
  • Engaging in an intimate relationship (consensual or otherwise) with a faculty member.
  • Engaging in personal external activities for your employer or faculty adviser, if such involvement is coerced or presented as a quid pro quo (i.e., a favor for a favor) or would conflict with your time commitments to the university.
  • Engaging in an intimate relationship (consensual or otherwise) with a student that you tutor.
  • Engaging in personal or detrimental conversation with students regarding UCF faculty, SARC staff members or other students.

When engaging people external to the SARC community, you become an ambassador for the department and are expected to behave with the highest standards of professionalism.
  • Harassing others by any means for any reason is unacceptable.
  • Engaging in false criticisms or making accusations that you know are false are unacceptable.

Should undue pressure be brought upon you to engage in such behavior by one who has supervisory responsibility over you, please report the situation to your supervisor, or the Equal Opportunity/ Affirmative Action office on campus.


  1. Responsibility: Tutors will take responsibility for their own behavior and work to resolve conflicts that may arise between themselves and other students.
  2. Integrity: Tutors will practice and promote accuracy, honesty, and truthfulness.
  3. Fairness: Tutors will exercise reasonable judgment and take precautions to ensure that their potential biases, the boundaries of their competence, and the limitations of their expertise do not lead to or condone unjust practices.
  4. Commitment: Tutors will fulfill commitments made to learners and supervisors.
  5. Respect for Others Rights and Dignity: Tutors will respect the dignity and worth of all people, and the rights of individuals to privacy, confidentiality and self-determination.
  6. Excellence: Tutors will strive to maintain excellence by continuing to improve their tutoring skills and engage in applicable professional development activities and trainings.
  7. Respect for Individual Differences: Tutors will respect cultural, individual, and role differences, including those based on age, sex, gender identity, race, ethnicity, culture, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, disability, language and socioeconomic status.
  8. Professionalism: Tutors will not engage in inappropriate relations with tutees.
  9. Confidentiality: Tutors will maintain the highest privacy standards in terms of protecting personal information relative to those whom they tutor.


Private tutoring policies are in place to ensure there is a distinction between the group tutoring that SARC provides as a free service to UCF students and any private, one-on-one tutoring (not affiliated with SARC or UCF) that SI Leaders and Tutors may choose to provide on their own.
