National Tutoring Week 2012

Monday, October 1st – Friday, October 5th, 2012

Overview of Events

National Tutoring Week is a week-long event in appreciation of peer tutors and tutoring celebrated across the country. During October 1 – 5, 2012 SARC proudly celebrated National Tutoring Week with a handful of leadership and team building events for our student staff of just over 100 peer tutors, Supplemental Instruction leaders, peer mentors and student assistants. Following is a brief account of some of the ways the University of Central Florida celebrated National Tutoring Week 2012.

Monday, October 1st – NTW Kick-Off Potluck Brunch, SARC Lab

Student staff brought their own breakfast to the SARC lab to kick-off NTW with a meal together. This was a great time for students to check their mailboxes for s’mores surprises and get their photos taken in the SARC Photo Booth and in their tackiest t-shirts to enter the Tacky Tutor T-shirt Contest. Winner of the t-shirt contest was announced on Friday, October 5th at the culminating NTW event. 24 professional staff, peer tutors, supplemental instruction leaders, student assistants, mentors, and GAs enjoyed this event.

Tuesday, October 2nd – Rock Wall Climbing at the UCF Rec & Wellness Center

Students and staff challenged themselves to a course in self-awareness, leadership and group dynamics as members of the SARC team tackled UCF’s acclaimed rock wall in the RWC together. Students and staff originally planned to participate in the RWC Ropes Course Challenge but this event was canceled due to lightening. SARC made the best of the rope’s course cancellation by conquering the rock wall.

Wednesday, October 3rd – Volunteering at the UCF Community Garden, UCF Arboretum

SARC’s professional and student staff joined in service at the UCF Community Gardens. Along with several other UCF volunteers and led by members of the Arboretum staff, SARC weeded and laid cardboard and mulch for an incoming blackberry patch as well as received an informational tour of the gardens. SARC enjoyed giving back by beautifying UCF’s very own community garden and several members of the staff have since returned to the gardens for additional days of service.

Thursday, October 4th – Tutor Tailgate, Outside HPH by Reflecting Pond

Together with student and professional staff from the UCF MALL, Writing Center, Math Lab and ASSA, 30 SARC staff members came together to tailgate prior to UCF’s week night home game against ECU. These academic support offices joined together for the first time in UCF National Tutoring Week history to enjoy delicious, free grilled food, play volleyball and to socialize.

Friday, October 5th – Movie Night, SARC Tutoring Lab

The students and professional staff at SARC said goodbye to National Tutoring Week with a night of movie watching and popcorn popping in the SARC Tutoring Lab. During the movie night, raffle prizes were distributed and the winner of SARC’s tacky tutor t-shirt contest was announced. The movie “Ocean’s Eleven” was viewed and several student staff members wore their pajamas and brought food to share.

In Conclusion

A photo booth with silly props was set up for tutors and student tutees to utilize throughout National Tutoring Week. These photos were linked to SARC’s Facebook page through the SARC website to encourage greater student use of SARC’s social media platforms. A link to the Peer Tutor Assessment was also included in this section of the SARC website. Additionally, “Leaf Your Tutor a Thank You” displays in the SARC, CECS and VARC tutoring labs were created for students tutees to provide written feedback and words of thanks to their tutors and SI Leaders.

Additionally, the Central Florida Future wrote an article about UCF’s celebration of National Tutoring Week that spotlighted SARC’s current peer tutoring as well as online services. The article also included information about ways tutees could thank their tutors during National Tutoring Week. Finally, as a way to thank SARC’s peer tutors and Supplemental Instruction leaders for their dedication to SARC’s mission of assisting UCF students in their transition to the university, generous donations from Chick-Fil-A, Smoothie King, Jeremiah’s, Sbarro, Sweet Cupcakes, Staples, the SGA Ticket Center, Life Vitamin Water, 4Ever Knights and the UCF Technology Product Center were provided to SARC’s student staff throughout the week. SARC professional staff, SDES Assistant Vice President Mark Gumble and Associate Vice President DeLaine Priest also all provided letters of thanks to SARC’s student staff for their hard work and positivity.
